Gustavo “Gus” Cabrera was born and raised in Miami-Dade County. At an early age Gus became curious to see what the world had to offer. Eventually this led to selling drugs and abusing alcohol. It wasn’t long before his reckless lifestyle led him to serve more than three years in a Florida correctional facility. At the age of 20, Gus’ long-time childhood friend and mentor was gunned down innocently as a victim of an armed robbery in North West Miami. After the tragic loss of his friend, Gus’ life spiraled out of control, and at the age of 25, his life had reached rock bottom. In May 2012, he was involved in a federal investigation that landed him back in jail facing 55 years for conspiracy to murder. In the most desperate and lowest point of his life he cried out to Jesus Christ and was set free from all federal charges. He moved from Miami, Florida and relocated to Palmetto where he entered Loving Hands Ministries (a discipleship program to redirect young men with addictions back to God.) After he completed the two-year residential program, he stayed on as a full time staff member while being closely mentored by Loving Hands’ Founder, Dr. Wendell C. Wilson. Gus has now been serving at Loving Hands Ministries for five years and serves as the Program Director.
Gus is the founder and visionary behind the More Than Words Conference. He is currently working on completing his Bachelor’s degree in Ministerial Leadership at Southeastern University. God has gifted him with the ability to communicate the word of God in a powerful way, and he has a passion to travel and to reach this generation with the power of the Gospel. His story is relevant and relatable to many. He brings the same message that saved him from a destructive lifestyle, which is the good news of Jesus Christ.
